"The Isle is full of noises, Sounds, and sweet
airs, That give delight and hurt not: Sometimes a thousand Twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears; And
sometimes voices..."
From 'The Tempest' III. 2
by William Shakespeare
In England, classical music usually
means music from the Continent,
so it seems fitting that the most
famous English composer was in
fact a German. But as well as the
redoubtable George Frideric Handel,
England can also boast the magnificent
music of Purcell, Elgar and Vaughan Williams,
plus many other lesser-known composers
who deserve far greater recognition.
